So you found me! My name is Johnny Chandler and I was born and raised in northeast Alabama! Somehow I have managed to spend most of my 32 years in the beautiful state. It could be the great white clouds and beautiful rolling hills that keep me here. I lived in Jacksonville Alabama for 7 years and have managed to make it back!
I spent almost a year in Nashville living off of West end near Vandy. Let me tell you Nashville was a trip and I can’t believe I made it through drunkville, well maybe that is a little harsh! I worked at on Printers’s Alley as a fill in sound guy and worked at Sammy T’s in Huntsville Alabama at the time! After Nashville I made it to Birmingham for 3 years and decided that I needed to get my ducks in a row and get with reality.
So I made it back to Jacksonville and can’t say enough for the beautiful area that surrounds this little southern town. Not much has changed since I left except for all the new restaurants and they are even building a new hotel! The old Wal-Mart is now a thrift store and the new Wally world is the busiest thing in town.
As I drive down the street and head to the square a sudden flashback of my younger days hits me like a rocket! Did I really work at Brother’s Bar for 5 years; did I transcend space and time to make it back to where I started my Pro college days?
It is hard to believe that I am living in the same apartment complex as I lived for 7 earlier. I stumble through my apartment in dark only to find the path I took once before had taken a million times. Not much has changed in the old neighborhood, still the same manager and the same road bumps and the same sunset!
I sit now reflecting back on my older days and wonder where I went wrong and where I went right. I have managed to bea Pro Freelance audio engineer working on 100,000 consoles with world-class talent to a closet songwriter popping up at random open mics and giving it all my soul. I managed to step on the stage with some of greatest artist of our time in the Birmingham area.
Just recently I have felt the urge to play more and keep pursuing the recording. I have also felt that I have jumped to the other side of writing and style. I can’t wait to record the songs I have written with my friends and enjoy the journey.
The last recording artist I recorded is doing very well and people love his tracks. I am so high on life and can’t wait to lay some more tracks from Tedd Tedder.
I have also been talking to a couple of people about doing some duos and I am about to start playing out again. What can I say I am hooked! I would compare the feeling of playing to great crowd as jumping off a mountain side wall with a rope! It is the most awesome feeling in the world.
I had been watching people play for 12 years and had to find out what it felt like! It was a drive that I could not control and still feel the urge to hit the stage. Life is all stages, which we face, and every day brings a new stage to play, what will be your song?
Lately I have felt that life is moving at the speed of light and I am heading through the haze with my eyes wide open. I have been looking back from childhood as a kid working in the chicken houses with my uncle to working for the group Alabama when I was 16.
Most of my childhood I spent running from roosters wanting to spur me to fishing before school on cold fall mornings. I hung out with the cool wild country kids that liked to dip and thought fishing and cattle were the way. We call them good old country boys in Alabama.
I spent many afternoons riding the tractor cutting the field for watermelons, squash, peppers, green beans, tomatoes, and every other veggie you can think of! I watched my uncles cows grow old and watched as the fence fell with age. I even got to pick bell pepper for a short time when I was around 12, nothing like grabbing a rotten one!
I would wake up around 5 every morning and go with my dad so he could open and run the Chandler store. I would often crawl in the back and fall back to sleep before I had to be up for school. I got to see all the people come and go and sat and wondered where they were all going and doing.
I sat on that old green bench for years learning how to play guitar and watched the sunset and the cars go up and down the road. My dad bought a minnow tank and we had minnows for a bit until the motor broke and then I used to beat on it uncle it drove my uncle Terry crazy, I am sure he still remembers!
I had a great childhood and being a punk kids didn’t see this until recently. Growing up in rural Alabama has been an awesome and inspiring experience for me. Within fifteen minutes I could be to 4 waterfalls and had Guntersville State Park, Buck’s Pocket, High Falls, Griffin Falls and Little River canyon just across the valley from me.
I could not dream of a more magical place to grow up and go to high school. We would camp on town creek and laughed through night as we sipped the drink we got from the bootlegger down in section. I also spent many morning watching the sun come up over Guntersville Lake and watching the cranes looking for fresh food.
I dream that one day I can sit at that camping space and watch that same sun go down over the water. I can taste the fresh grilled pancakes melting in my mouth as the waves crash in and shells wash ashore. One day I am hoping to find that message in a bottle to return to me, until then I will keep looking! Thanks for reading more to come soon!
It is March 2008 and the race is on to save the very fast changing world we live in. We have been at war for over 5 years now and I don’t see a change coming any time soon. With war comes an unbalanced economy and we have seen a direct impact on the national debt and the state of the union. We basically piled debt on top of debt and the poor are getting poorer as you read this. We have also seen huge increases in the price of gas and that causes the price of everything to go up!I have been sitting around thinking how can I make a change for the better and start giving more respect to the world that surrounds us! How can I lower the impact that my life has on mother earth? So last week I decided to start a list of things that I can do to help the world rather than hurt it. I also thought about the beneficial rewards that I would get like lower bills and better quality of life. The first questions I thought about was food! How to eat cheaper and throw less away!So I pretty made a rule for myself!1. Buy fresh food and stay away from boxed and food shipped from far away!2. Buy Food in containers that you can reuse for food storage or use them as Plant containers or for other storage.3. Make fewer trips to the store and try to stock up on longer lasting veggies. I buy potatoes and onions , oranges, sweet potatoes, peanut butter, asparagus, green beans, spinach.4. I buy fresh to reduce garbage and use the bags for trash bags or for shipping stuff(they make great stuffing and protections for shipped goods)5. I stopped drinking sodas and drink water and coffee.6. I reuse coffee grounds as fertilizer for plants!7 Take short showers and don’t use water just to waste it. Lets keep things cheaper and conserve when there are watches and warnings. This includes carwashes during draughts and over watering lawns. Not only does this produce molds and spreads disease it is a practice. Just watch the weather channel and they will tell you everything that is going on and if it is ok to water or wait!8. Make sure your toilet isn’t leaking. If you hear it refill after a while it has a leak!9. No dripping faucets!10.Use candles for light and heat11.Try not to run the heat and use more candles, be careful though. You’re playing with fire!12.Use that toilet a few times between flushes if it is just you and no poi.13.Plant your own Herbs and Plants to eat and use the coffee grounds for fertilizer.14.Walk more and drive less. Carpool when possible?15.Don’t eat out too much, sure eating out is good for the economy! Take your leftovers home and eat them tomorrow!16.Check your tires often. The environment is always changing and you can save gas money this way and help lower pollution. You can find this info on a label either on the door, fuse box, or in the manual. I also ask a few different tire guys to make sure you are using the right pressure for the brand you have.17. Make sure your oil and car fluids are at the right level.18.Don’t leave on lights throughout the house. Use environmental friendly lighting. According to CNN lighting is a 40-billions dollar a year industry and there are huge fears of changing the format that we use to light! You better bet you grapes that the big dogs in corporate America Power are praying to god that led doesn’t take over and become the new standard! Just think all the money that can be saved using this method of lighting. They are called light omitting diodes and are eco friendly and have no mercury unlike CFLS and last over a decade! IT is by far the best method of lighting and is being used in towns and business all the world for various causes. Over 95% of the energy that is used incandescent bulbs is wasted into heat energy!19. Don’t buy new things, burn up the thrift stores and find those hidden deals. I got a 50-dollar microwave for 15 and it was in great shape! I got a toaster for 4 and it rocks, rah yeah a coffee maker for 3$, what a deal and I saved a whopping 100! If I had shopped at Wal-Mart it would have been 4 times as much. I bought a desk chair for 10 bucks and saved 20 on the deal! You just have to be patient and keep you eye open for roadside deals.20.Go to the Thrift store buy and old record player and flip it on EBay! Not only are yousupporting the store you are supporting EBay and you making money and helping someone find that dream lost treasure. I have been flipping Junk store goods for about 5 years now and love the process. I love when you find that perfect EBay hit and you get offered more than you dreamed for the item. Also buy used things from the net, it works in the same process and you help keep the earth a greener place!21.Make sure you keep good wires and plugs on your car! It saves a great deal of gas money and keeps pollution down.22 Don’t use anything with Aspartame in it, not only is it bad for your body but it gets put back into to the watershed. I know some of you just got mad and may have decided to stop reading, but wait read this!! I did a little research and this is what I figured out. This is just opinion but this makes me yonder! Aspartame is made from two amino acids, or protein components, aspartic acid and phenylalanine. I looked up Phenylalanine and was upset at what I saw!IF you have phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare birth defect in which an enzyme needed to process phenylalanine is missing. If you consume too much you could die very suddenly. Diet sodas and other foods may contain Aspartame, which is roughly 50% phenylalanine. They say 1-15,000 are born with this disorder. Lets take Aspartame out of the picture and out of the water table!23.Think before you buy and don’t be a buy now guy. Make a list of things you need and keep on the wall!24.Get an LCd monitor they are cheaper to run and better for earth.25.Stay in environmental friendly Hotels and use eco companies as much as often.26.Shop at yard sales! Every Saturday you can great sales all over the south and great state of Alabama! There are even yard sale festivals all over the country.27. US reusable products as often as possible!28. Donate your old stuff to thrift stores and let someone have a brighter future.29. Don’t buy new books, go to library if you don’t have the money! Plus they may have wifi and records that you need!30. Use natural Fertilizer on plants(organic), it is good for the plants and good for you.31.Don’t pay 8 for shampoo, get the cheap stuff and try to get natural.32. Don’t shave as much, guys grow a beard!33. Slow down on the road 40-60 is around the optimum speed to save money and varies from car to car. (source howstuffworks.com) General rule Bigger gets betters mileage the slower you go and the more aerodynamic the vehicle the higher speed(Go here bookmark and check this site out! http://www.globalstewards.org34. Try to use recycles things always!35. Use Hemp products and natural products36. Carry a water bottle and keep it full and stop stopping at the store.37.I used to smoke cigarettes and wasted much of my money on them and stopped a few years ago. IT makes you feel so much better after you lose the toxins from them. IT is choice and will not get into this. Roll your own it is cheaper and natural!38. Carry snacks from home like fruit with you, healthy and smart too.39. Are you addicted to the Gum? Cut down and watch out for new gums and candies.40 .Turn off your computer or put it to sleep. Putting it to sleep when you’re not using it. Same thing with your TV also.41. Today I bought compact fluorescent lightbulbs. 13 watts at 800 lumens verses 60 watts at 850. That is a huge difference in power consumption and you can find compact fluorescent at your local dollar store. I bought two for $5 bucks and they are supposed to last 5 years. I will let you know how long they last. I really do think the light is brighter than other light sources. Led is nice but cost around double the price the compact fluorescent. Thanks for Reading my life saving tips for the environment I hope I made someone think and start practicing the art of conservation. In my quest to find to new traffic for my sites I have managed to find strange differences in the traffic that I am getting. I decided to build my profiles at different sites and add links to my sites! Some of my profiles get a little traffic and some seem to get none at all!
It has been around 4 weeks that I started my personal profile campaign. I added a little information here and a little there trying to build up the information in my site! I figured that many social networking sites would have similar structure and would work like a site index would work. You know the more information equals the more content that you have!
I did a comparison on my sites and found some crazy differences in the traffic that I have gotten! I also decided that I needed to take a closer looks at my demographic and why the sites were acting in such ways.So here are some of my findings about a few social
Networking sites!
I have been a member of Myspace for about 4 years and have already built some traffic to my site. So it is really hard to tell how much I really get but my total is 2464. This has been over the life of my profile and really isn’t many visits compared to most profiles out there! I can honestly say I haven’t been too active on the site and plan to do more bogging soon! I will get back to you on this one soon!
As far as 360 goes! As you all know yahoo turned down that whopping 44.6 Billions dollar offer.Wait, what she say “rewinds in my head, Microsoft offers yahoo 44 million. No Billion what?”It was like the earth just stopping and we were saying what at the same time! So wow, I am so glad Yahoo said no and plan on building a new system with the hottest tech out there! So I decide to do some research and found a few really cool things out about Yahoo!
First Yahoo has decides to replace their 360 profile system with a new system that is more web friendly and newer and better technology.I think is a great thing and it says to the people that they plan on staying in the game for awhile! Many critics believe that Microsoft will pay or do anything possible to gain ownership in Yahoo!
I hope some of the guys from Yahoo read this and realize they are still a few people out there that understand the importance of real value in long term business. Plus if you let2 people have the whole pie that knocks out the little guy trying to make a living from home, out in the country.By standing up for the small business we all build a better future for the whole planet! There will be a new guy that will take over someone and we are all just waiting to who it will! You never know it may be you one day!
So all of you Yahoo and Yahoo360 people just wait and you will see a new system being used within the year! They promise a better more powerful system! Check out the blog herehttp://blog.360.yahoo.com/product_360Bookmark this and go read it when you got some time to kill! They tell you everything happening with Yahoo!
Oh yeah I gotten290 views in 2 months on 360! Can’t wait till they change the system!
The next profile I joined is friendsite and they have a very cool system and awesome interface! It is a well done site with everything you need in one social networking site! I predict this site will blow up in the social networking world. I have received 245 page views in the last 2 months with just natural traffic with no blog! I am hoping they are goingto add a RSS feed reader to their blog one day. This goes for all the Social sites!
If all the social networking sites had a feed reader option for the blog it would make it rock for us bloggers that want to cover our ground! IF I could just blog from one of my sites and have it sent to all my social networking sites I would be the happiest guy in the world. I would write everyday and feel great about covering some hot blogging ground.
We all know that is what the world really needs is anew hot blog punk!
Anyway back to the story! Next is facebook! I got to admit Facebook is pretty neat and powerful once you get the hang of it! I haven’t been able to see how many profile views I have had but just added Pro Counter! I can’t wait and I am also addingall my profile information and pimping it out soon!More on facebook soon!
Next is myyearbook.com! I really don’t know what to think of this site yet! I have been a member for about 3 weeks and have had but 1profile view and 21 admirers. Plus can’t forget all the mails from out of state larger woman! This is another site that I can’t wait to see what happens! More coming soon!
Bebo has about 10 views and has been up for about 3 weeks with no blog up yet!I am still waiting to get a blog up and running on the site and see what happens with it!
Can’t forget about Multiply either! This one has gotten me wondering! After being up for a month and adding a good bit of content I haven’t had but 3 page views by two people in other countries! The name fooled me a good bit on this site! I love the way it is se up and from the outside looking in, it gets a 90 easy! It has a great RSS feeder and is great for a master blog site but will not work with some readers at the current time!
I read about them at mashable.com and they are approaching 3 millions users and they are out of Boca Raton, Florida! I would have never guessed they were near me, I thought they were from another country. I assumed this on the 3 page views I have got! I am hoping one day I will open my profile and see 2,200 pg’s! Not anytime soon I suppose, maybe I got tochange a setting or blog till I turn blue! Got to keep a close eye on this site and find where I go wrong!
OK I just got back from reading a few reviews for Multiply and see there are good cheers for them from a few people on the net. Really I could not find any big hitters chatting them up at any top pages hits. Maybe they have a cool thing going on and I haven’t figured it out yet. I will have to get back to you soon and let you know how well I am Multiplying!
I have also built a few profiles at reverbnation and Shoutlife and I am seeing a steady page view from both sites! I haven’t had any communication to me from other user but have had a few fan request from Shoutlife. You would think a Christian based site would produce friendlier people and more friend request! I guess not so much, still trying to figure out what is up with this site! Both site do make great music sites though and have a great front-end to them!
Well that is all I want to talk about today and will give an update in a few weeks to my sites and I hope to find some other great sites to join also! Stay tuned, you never know what site might jump out in the pack and impress you. Who could be next in the world wide race? I got a new update coming soon!
It’s about to be springtime once again in Birmingham, Alabama and time to start fighting the allergies!Coming from the country allergies was something you got used to and could easily be helped with a little whisky, naww that’s just an old wise tell! Anyway I have found that in the city, allergies can be a huge battle! Sometimes I just have to getaway to get some fresh air to clear my head! The only relief seems to be an occasional trip to the country.
It was just over 4 years ago that I moved to Birmingham from Nashville and it has been a lot of fun. On any given day you can ride around the ham and see the beautiful smoke stacks just puffing away! One of the best places to see this is up at the canon near Altamont school. If you look straight ahead you will see the huge orange flame that dominates the smoggy Birmingham sky. The best view is in the wintertime, with no leaves to block the way! Go right before sunset and you can watch the city transform and light up the night clouds.
The flame is located near the Avondale area and burns non-stop 24-7 is what I understand. If you drive near it at night you will sense the power and have a better understanding of the size.Every time I see it I wonder the same thing,“humm I wonder what’s being burnt?” It even burns during the rain. There are many other flames that are burning across Jefferson county everyday as well. I was totally overwhelmed by how many smoke stacks there are in Birmingham! I would there are more in Birmingham than any other city I have been to.
My buddy Chuck lives on the side of Red Mountain near Vulcan and has great view of downtown and surrounding areas! You can look off in the distance and see at least 4 smoke stacks on any given day, not to mention many planes flying through downtown to get to the airport. I often have to do a double take and realize that I am in Birmingham and not some nuclear wasteland on the path to death. If you look off to the NW you will see several huge smoke stacks that I understand to belong to Alabama Power. If you drive west on 59 you will several other stacks around the Hueytown area.
What is even scarier is the statistics you can read in the paper of the top polluters in Birmingham. For some strange reason they keep polluting and releasing chemicals into the watershed. What is really sad is that they pay their fine and do it again and again.I hear a lot of people say, “The Earth will heal itself!”That may be true to a degree, but all the long-term damage that is done to our eco-system is not reversible! What about the effect it will have on genetic code and all the organisms that start the cycle of life. What is really crazy is that it all can be prevented if we stand up and take control of this computerised corporate world. It all starts here and now today and not tomorrow!
You can be a leader and change what is happening in around your area by reading the newspaper and watching the news! Look in magazines and find reports that are issued yearly and even monthly!Join your local protection agency! For the Alabama area click here..http://www.aeconline.ws/If you ever see something that is not right in your community you should mail them and let them know what is up!
If we all decide today to make a change and start using more alternative Energy sources we may all face a much cleaner and greener future.I started recycling a few years ago and have never stopped. That is the quickest and easiest thing that you can do to change this world today! I have a friend who learned that she could make money from the cans she had been throwing away for years. Now she enjoys the extra cash she makes every couple of months. It is amazing the feeling of positive Energy that flows through you when you realize how you become a part of the change for the better.
There are many other things that you can do to help the earth as well as save a ton in the wallet! You would be surprised how cutting the lights off when not needed and not wasting hot water can add up to a lot of cash. Also don’t forget about carpooling, a simple and effective act that can save you money and save earth.Hey that TV, throw it out the door! There are better things you can spend your time doing! For yawl that have to watch some tv, just turn it off when you are not using it!Anyway until next time catch my new Blog“ Pave the Grass then Paint it Green!” Coming next week……….
IF you have any stories with pics , would love to post them! Of course i am only interested in environmental problems!
It is almost that time of the year again! The Bears are about to wake out of their wintertime hibernation. You better believe those guys are going to be hungry when they get up. They will be on the prowl throughout the mountains and will be hanging out near the creek looking for an easy meal!
Every spring when the bears wake there is the possibility of human contact and if you are wise you will walk away without any incident. Never incite a bear or he might just come and show how tough he really is! And you my friend are no competition for an 800 pound bear or even a 300 pound bear! You got to remember they fight to live everyday and with huge claws that cut through a salmon with precision, you are no match.
Bears are found all over the world and can walk on their heels like a human. They have large bodies, small round ears, with a short stubby tail. Bears are classified carnivores and each species varies amounts of herbivorous behavior. The Polar bear is mostly a meat eaters and the Panda likes plants.

They have been known to come in different colors- brown black bear, white black bear, and even the Blue Glacier Bear. They are great climbers and use trees often for protection. There are 18 known sub-species of bear and you can say they are the most successful bear.
So next time you are up in the mountain or driving down the road through PennState. Be sure to let these guys do what they are doing and never approach a beer. Once you piss a bear off it could be very bad for you. They have been known to rip holes in the tops of cars and they can break a window with no effort! There is no hiding once you make him mad!
The rules:For whatever reason Do Not Ever Run from a bear! There is no way you could ever run from a bear! They run up to 30 mph and could catch you in no time! Just try to back away slowly and if they come for you, you better find a tall tree you can climb! It is recommended to be as high 35 feet in the air! Remember black bear are great climbers but they can be lazy too, your climbing skills may save your life. Grizzlies aren’t great climbers but they can jump high!
For a Brown Bear you will be safer in the fetal position and play dead and hope that it works. He may leave you alone if he thinks you are not a threat. For a black bear you better be ready to fight and use anything available. Pepper Spray in the eyes or a big stick and fight for your life. Be sure to never drop your backpack and run! You can use it to save your life!
Do not ever provoke a bear! They are wild and will kill you! Never feed a bear or leave food sitting around a camp site! Many bear have become addicted to human food and will kill to have it.
Thanks for reading and hope these tips may save your life one!
Imagine one day that you are hiking through the woods and the temp is a mild 50 and you are half way to the summit. You look to the west and see a huge dark cloud blowing in! The first thing you think “Damn I should have checked the weather!”
You keep hiking and blow it off and pretend life is grand! You are smiling just enjoying the view when suddenly you see a flake and then another flake! Before long it is starting to turn the ground white and the temp just dropped 20 degrees within an hour. You are in the middle of a 5 mile hike and stuck in the middle of a snow storm and you didn’t bring warm clothes!
It is late fall in the Appalachian mountains near pigeon Forge, TN and you are alone in the mountains about to make the biggest fight of your life! You start thinking and remember that you didn’t bring a lighter or matches with you! Your thinking “What if I would have carried more food?”It is starting to get dark and everything around you has started to turn white.
You start to panic and realize that you need heat and shelter now! Please don’t get wet, please! You know that feet are wet from the snow and to find wood is going to be harder and harder as the snow pours down. By now wind has started to pick up and the snow is so thick that it is hard to see! You are starting to think back to that college survival class and remember, rah got to find a cave and start a fire. So as you hike to find a cave you are becoming more wet as the snow melts and soaks into your clothes.
You find a cave and start to gather wood; you get lucky and find a whole pile leftover from a beaver earlier in the year! Now you have built a pile of wood and have even managed to find some dry leaves before they got too damp by the heavy snow! Now what, how are we going to start that fire pal? Hum the snow has hidden all the rock so finding some good rock will be super hard! Hum lets go for the bow shaped stick with shoestring technique.
So we have taken a shoestring and have found a stick that is bent and have made a bow with it! Now take a straight stick a couple of feet long and twist it on your shoestring! Now you should be able to move the stick as it is attached to the stick. Now find a larger flat piece of wood and try to find a little pocket where you can place the end of your stick.
Once in place start pulling the bow back and fourth and try to hold downward pressure to the stick! After a few minutes you should start to smell the burning wood! Take some dry leaves and crumble them up and add the crumbles to your hole. Keep on bowing the stick and soon you should have fire! Add more leaves and keep building the fire up! Blow on the fire and it will build faster!
As soon as you the fire gets large you need to dry out your clothes! The wet clothes can drop your body temp very fast and hypothermia can set in! If your clothes are super wet, take them off and place very close to the fire. Don’t burn them; you will need them to stay alive! Alright we got passed step 1!
Simple life saving tips will come to you in the moment of need. Here is a good tip for keeping warm more efficiently using the heat energy of the fire. It will be a great deal of work but well worth it if you need the heat. Find some rocks and build a wall around the fire. The heat will be absorbed into the rocks and will last longer. Plus you can take the rocks and build a bed with them and stay very warm!
If you are having trouble keeping the wood burning, find a big leaf and keep fresh air to it. In survival class we learned how to make a really cool fire pit!
We dug a hole about a foot and half by foot and half wide. We then dug another hole about a foot from the large and made it just big enough to get air through. Then I dug a hole to connect them. This caused better air circulation to the fire pit. It acts much like a chimney of a house. It will be tough to get the fire started but well worth it once you get it going. I believe this to be the most efficient method using air flow!
So you wake up the next morning and it looks like your in the middle of Russia and everything has 2 foot of snow! You sit for awhile and realize you have no idea where you are and you know walking in snow can be a dangerous feat in the woods. You have no food and you have built a nice little fire and you have found a rock overhang to make camp!
The weather is still cloudy and you see a flake here and there and wonder what should I do? You could find a creak and follow down stream and hope to find people! That sounds too risky and you could end up deeper in the woods and stuck in a larger storm with no cave to hide in! What about build a huge fire near the creek and hope someone sees the smoke? This could be a good solution if the clouds aren’t too thick!
Fires have saves much life and the heat can keep you warm until it is time for supper! When you’re lost in the woods and need food, it is time to kick in primitive hunting style! The easiest and quickest hunting solution would be a long dagger!
You will need a sharp rock that has some good weight to it! Walk around and find a nice tree that is about an inch to inch and a half and is very straight. Take the rock and use the weight and cut the tree with the sharp tip. Go all around the tree and try to make the sharpest tip you can. Once you get the tree down, cut the other end so that the spear is about the same height as you are and cut the end.
Ok now you have made an awesome hunting spear and you are ready to begin the hunt. I would suggest going to the creek and try spearing fish. They are relatively easy to catch and they cook quickly and have the nutrients to keep your mind sharp. It is not easy and will take you awhile to master the technique. By now you should sitting and eating your fresh caught river trout and the sun is starting to set. Another night in the cave, will help come soon. To be continued….

The year was 1540 and Hernando Desoto and his Army of Spanish Conquistadors were on their waydown the ChattoogaRiver heading towardCedar Bluff, Alabama. On June 4th, 1540 they arrived and campedfor almost a month on an island. It was soon named McCoy’s island, ‘Chiaha” was the name given by Desoto’s historians.
As they arrived they found the beauty of the two rivers and the Coosa valley to be very pleasing. They decided to rest at McCoy’s Island to heal the men and horses. It was also very abundant in food and the perfect camp after a long hard journey through the Appalachian Mountains. A journey that was very difficult and a challenge for even the most experienced warrior!
There were rumors of gold to be found in the north and west hills of LookoutMountain. So Desoto decides to send a small army of men led by lieutenant Vilabo and Silva. They departed on June 1570 and passed between Menlo, Georgia and Blanche, Alabama toward DesotoFalls near Mentone, Alabama! They decided to camp for a few days at the
104 foot waterfalls. It is located on the west fork of little river on LookoutMountain.
For several days the troops searched the area for gold and other treasures and then proceeded to pass through Big Wills to Henagar Alabama. Here they found south Sauty Creek and followed it all the way to Buck’s PocketState Park. It is said that the men were blown away by the view from point rock and did not find gold but found iron Oxide high in the cliffs around Buck’s Pocket! There is no historical evidence that says they went any further than Buck’s pocket or ever saw the Tennessee River!
From this point the party headed back toward McCoy’s Island and passed through the town of Sand Rock, Alabama. The men returned to Chiaha (McCoy’s Island) near Hokes Bluff. They arrived to discover that Desoto and the main party had set trail June 28, 1540 down the CoosaRiver. Desoto had left a few wounded men behind to wait for the Sand mountain crew to return. They departed to catch up with Desoto and arrived on June 18, 1540 only two days behind Desoto’s arrival on July 16, 1540. They camped at the mouth of the Talladega creek in TalladegaCounty.
Many people say that Desoto discovered the falls but there is evidence that the area was used by Indians and even the Welsh!Located near 325 feet above little river are three caves that are interconnected by openings between the caverns. They are protected by the cliff and only a narrow trail leads the way to the Welsh caves. It is rumored that only a few men could fight off an army of troops. The trail was so narrow that only one man could pass at a time.
It is believed that the Welsh traveled to the New World over 300 years before Columbus and made 3 trips. They sailed into MobileBay and traveled to LookoutMountain. The Indians of the time did not possess the skill of excavation and it is believed that the Welsh came and built the caves high above little river. There were also six skeletons found wearing brass armor with the Welsh coat of arms.
Desoto falls is an awesome waterfalls and seeing it in person is inspiring and beautiful. To see the foliage in the fall is breath taken and colors are super vibrant. I could not imagine what it would have looked like 500 years ago. The area is still very preserved and has an abundant supply of wildlife.
In the 1920’s Arthur Abernathy Miller and self taught electrical engineer built a twenty-foot high damn above the falls.Author built the damn to supply power to his hydroelectric generator on the west side of the gorge. There is still a square concrete slab where thegeneratorone was. It supplied power for fortPayne, Collinsville, Mentone, valley head, Alabama and Menlo Georgia..If it wasn’t for Miller’s genius many people in the area would have been without power.
DesotoState Park is one of Alabama most beautiful areas and has many things to do year around. They have cabins, chalets, swimming, picnic area, hiking trails, and many special events. You can’t forget all the waterfalls in the area either: Indian falls, Azalea falls, laurel, lost falls, LodgeFalls, and of course DesotoFalls! You could spend a week in Desoto state park just looking at waterfalls and hiking. Little river falls and many other falls around Little River Canyon are just a short drive away! There are a few great trails, Wildflower trail that is perfect for you flower lovers. It is only 0.49 and begins and ends at the lodge! Looking for a longer hike you can take Laurel Creek Loop and is a total of 2.9 miles long. This is the perfect trail for you waterfall lovers and passes by laurel falls, lost Falls and azalea cascade. When it is dry you may not find Lost falls so be prepared! It also starts and ends at the same place making it a great trail for you hikers.
They have an awesome camping area with 58 water and electric sites and two comfort stations with restrooms with hot showers. You will want to make reservations, first come first serve. They also have 20 primitive camping spots and offer a group rate and a single person is $5.35 as of 2008. It is $3 per person with the group rate! You can also use the bathrooms and showers!
Need food, you have the Desoto State Park Mountain Inn cooking all the home classics.
There are also places in Mentone like Cragsmere Manna Restaurant and Dessie’sCountry Chef, just like mom used to make!
While you are in the area you must check out Little River Canyon National Preserve with great 700 foot cliffs and waterfalls along LookoutMountain.Little River is a rock climbers paradise and also has white water for you water ducks out there. Come to Alabama and see thebeauty of the mountain and lose yourself into nature. If you come in the winter time be sure to check out Cloudmont Ski and Golf. They start blowing Alabama snow as soon as it gets 28 degrees and the area gets an annual snowfall of 12 inches. Who would have ever thought it, Alabama snow! it is really pretty up against the beautiful Alabama background too!
Thanks for readingabout DesotoFalls on LookoutMountain. Come see Alabama and understand why they call it “Alabama the Beautiful!”
Hello everyone! Come check out Mountain Dream rentals. We have an awesome directory and can’t wait to remodel the site soon! I am planning on redoing the format and use a combination of codes and i will also be installing a forum. I started Mountain Dream Rentals two months ago and can’t wait to rebuild and make it more flowing and i plan on making the colors warmer. Let me tell you building a site can be a hard and long process! Check out our Cabin Rental site, it will not be long till spring!
I decided to compare both of my sites to see what was up and here are the results, or maybe lets say insults. The first site that i built is www.mountaindreamrentals.comand the second www.alabamarockcompany.com ! I starting building Mountain Dream Rentals and decided to add a store and then add a tips page! After I got the site up and running I decided to build Alabama Rock Company next and it has been a non-stop ordeal!
I made many mistakes in the beginning and missed out on some ad sense revenue because I didn’t have my ad sense account active! I thought it was ready to go and it just set there for 1 month losing clicks, it is ok I didn’t have that many clicks!I wanted to find the cheapest methods and get the most traffic! Without buying any ads or clicks and just going natural with a few duplicate content issues and a bunch of work!
Here is it the end of month 2 according to Awstats!
Alabama Rock Company got a whopping 448 unique visitors with 684 visits!
Mountain Dream Rentals 262 unique and 898 visits! Mountain dream also has 31 links to other sites! Compared to Alabama Rock Company with 38 links from other sites!
I was surprised at the stats considering Mountain Dream Rentals had a 2 week start on Alabama Rock Company. I attribute the traffic to natural keyword search power and a little more promotion through answers and questions.
I also have about 10 profiles at different social networking sites and I have 5 videos and 5 articles that are at different sites. I also paid a little to have 5 articles posted for distribution with my link on them and I have already seen pages on the net that are using my articles!
I can’t wait to see how much traffic I get by month three and see if I make any ad sense! It has been slow lately but i have been making a little! Maybe one day i can figure out how to tap into the real money! Thanks for reading.
