Every year Hundreds of thousands of people go to the mountains to get away to the peaceful beauty of the Nature. They rent a Vacation Rental and spend often weeks out in the wild. With a little help and a few pointers I will guide you through a safe and awesome vacation trip! Just go to our Cabin Directory and find your perfect rental villa.

One of the fist things to consider is the time of year and the weather! The mountains can get and stay very cold in the winter. Often surprise storms may trap you for a fews day so you better make sure you bring plenty with you!  Look up local numbers before you leave for you trip, it always makes it easy. Blankets, food, water. Long johns, x-tra socks, knives, cell phone, maps, radio can save your life. Check with your mountain chalet rental agency before you arrive for cabin information! It can save you from those unexpected little surprises.

I always bring a lot of x-tra clothes!  Hiking can get you dirty and wet sometimes. So make sure you have double the dry clothing that you will need. Plus bring some fast drying clothing in case you get too wet! It doesn’t take long to get cold after you get wet so be careful. Hypothermia can get you fast in the dead of winter. Keep your feet dry and also keep your head covered if it is freezing out. During the summer you may need bug spray, sunscreen and a good medical kit with a snake kit can save your life on a long hike.

When you hike make sure you wear some good support hiking books. I learnt the hard way one time. I was about half a mile in the woods playing on the boulders when I landed on a rock turning my ankle.  I had to hop out on one foot and I am still recovering from that event.  I hate to sound so bossy but the woods cans be a dangerous place for the uneducated.  In my cabin directory you can find links to a few outdoor safety sites as well.

So my point is! no matter how experienced or tough you may be, the woods can be a dangerous place! Try to always bring a friend or hike with a group. It might be a life saver for you!

My dad told me a story the other day of one of his Smoky Mountain trips. He was with my uncle Tracey camping at a site on the edge of the woods. It was around 2 in the morning when he heard a heavy breathing sound outside of his tent. He sat there shaking a sweating for a few minutes until he finally got the courage to look out! As soon as he opened the tent he saw a big black bear searching for a late night snack. They started screaming and finally they ran him into the woods. They got lucky!  They figured he was wanting some of there leftover supper!

So just be cautious and think before you make any backwoods mistakes! It is better to be like an Owl and Wise! Thanks for checking out our Mountain Safety Tips page!
